Are peptides legal in Spain?

In Spain, peptides approved as medicines are legal on prescription and regulated by the AEMPS together with the EMA. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are prescription-only. Peptides sold as research chemicals for human use are treated as unauthorised medicines, and mail-order sale of prescription medicines to the public is prohibited.

Approved prescription medicines

Peptide medicines authorised by the AEMPS or the EMA — semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide, octreotide, leuprorelin and others — are legal with a medical prescription and dispensed in pharmacies. Regional inspectors have flagged cases of dispensing without a proper prescription or for off-label indications, so enforcement of the prescription requirement is active.

Research-use-only peptides

Peptides imported as "research use only" for human use (BPC-157, TB-500, and similar) are treated as unauthorised medicines and are not legal to market for human consumption. Spanish law also prohibits the mail-order and distance sale to the public of medicines and health products that are subject to medical prescription.

Personal import

Spain does not offer a general personal-import allowance for unapproved medicines bought online; there are controlled routes for access to medicines in special situations, handled through the AEMPS and the health system rather than by direct consumer purchase. Unauthorised medicines can be intercepted.

Sport and anti-doping

The Spanish anti-doping agency (CELAD) enforces the WADA Prohibited List. Class S2 peptide hormones, growth factors, GHRH/GHRP analogues, and related substances are banned for athletes at all times.
